The heat sweltered around young Swamiji, manipulating the air around him, making every thing beyond the circle of fire that he sat within seem like an oasis. Inside his body, he seemed to radiate the heat of the ball of fire that he was staring at, the sun itself. Through all the sweat that crowded the pores of his face and dripped down, making sure not to tip over the pot of embers balanced on his head, he gazed at the sun unblinkingly. He had been doing this since sunrise and would continue until sunset- as long as the sun burned in the sky, he would burn in this position.
He left it to well-wishers and fellow tapasvis in order to rekindle the fire when it went low. He received a whole spectrum of looks from the onlookers.
“Swami, you’re so young! Why are you trying so hard?” An old lady asked him, as she limped by in a yellow and lime green sari.
“The fire within me rages! I’m doing this to at least abate that fire!” he responded quickly.
She didn’t say any more. How much does the wild fire of seeking need to burn within you so that you do this extremely physically strenuous tapas? How far would you go?
Today, Swamiji’s incredible healing power- that brings people back from the edge of existence and makes people walf out of a wheelchair after thirty years- is an effect of this incredible tapas. He visualizes a strong beam of light, just as he felt within him during this panchatapas and targets the disease he wants to eradicate. He is even giving us these powers as a gift to his disciples. We often would ask what it takes to manifest this kind of power. We are obsessed with what we would gain. But none of us ever think about how much we would give up. For Swamiji, that was even his life.
Finally, please understand this vignanamaya kosha miracles, bamboo is always used for vignanamaya kosha miracles. First you have to penetrate and get into a bamboo. That is why the bamboo is used lot in vedanta. See when you wanted to create the divya sharira, that disciples, first you have to work with bamboo. Bamboo is the plant which is ready for this divya sareera xperiment. That is why Shankara first experiments with bamboo, bamboo stick, danda, then he enters into Kashi Raja’s body. Please understand, from that time only giving bamboo danda, bamboo stick as a danda became a habit.
You see, first time, when he entered into Kashi Raja’s body, all the disciples were crying, “what we will do without you?” Then he enters into bamboo stick and gives one stick to all his disciples and tells them to protect this body and enters into Kashi Raja’s body and experiences the world and everything. Then he comes back. Then that after he came back also the disciples felt that the stick is a sacred and it represents master; so they started carrying. This is the way the bamboo danda being carried started in the vedantic tradition.
So always the danda given to the disciple will be height of the master because it represents master. There’s a measurement. They will take the master’s height and the master’s ajna height. The danda represents master. Bamboo is the tree you can use to create divya sareera. Actually when I first had the healing initiation, first thing I did is I came and practiced, tried it on our bamboo. Whether I am able to do that. My life energy entering into that because it was dead bamboo. The whole thing became alive. Then I know, wow now the divya sharira process is happening, the vignanamaya kosha process is happening. So the first medium of me is this bamboo grove. This bamboo grove is my first medium. And that is why from this bamboo grove we take bamboos and give for healing initiation also. So vignanamaya kosha miracles happen by the, with the bamboo. Bamboo is the plant for vignanamaya kosha miracles.
When Maha Avatar Babaji gave darshan to Swamiji in the magestic corners of Haridwar, he bestowed the name “Nithyananda” on him. The name was perfect for the Avatar of this age, when so many different cultures and traditions have branched out from the original seed that Sadashiva once lived in and still resides in.
Ramana Maharshi says in one place,”I don’t know when the word ‘Arunachala’ started overflowing in me.” he says, “From the time I know me, without anybody telling about me, I just know Arunachala is my place, abode! Before, I didn’t even know whether Arunachala is a hill or town or place. I just know Arunachala is my abode!” He says, “Arunachala Spurana, when it started, happened, I just don’t know!”
Same way, this Nithyananda Spurana, when it even started happening, I don’t know! That is the truth!
When I was referring the scriptures last few days, I saw this “Nithyananda” name is invariably used in all sampradayas. Shaivites call Shiva as “Nithyananda” in Rudram. Vaishnavites call Venkateshwara as Nithyananda in their stotras. Devi is addressed as “Nithyanandakari” by Adi Shankara in Annapurna Stotram! It is like a universal name, universal concept.
Please understand, ’till you experience that universal Nithyanandoham, go on doing completion, go on doing completion!
The universality of the name Nithyananda itself dictates Swamiji’s vision. He is not just for shaivites nor just for vaishnavites. He is the jagatguru- the universal guru.
