1989 | The Collected Pictures of Arunai Nayaki Amman

The Avatār absolutely loved deity-decoration. He recalls, “I STILL REMEMBER THERE WAS A PERIOD DURING MY LIFETIME JUST DOING ALANKHARAM (deity decoration) AND I WOULD FORGET DAY AND NIGHT!

This is Arunai Nayaki Amman temple in Tiruvannamalai, The Avatar’s birthplace. Arunai Nayaki Amman is a powerful four-thousand year old female deity in Tiruvannamalai referred to in the Arunācala Purāna (sacred text describing History of Arunācala, the Hillock-form of Lord Paramaśiva and Tiruvannamalai, its temple town).

The Avatār’s Vedānta guru Mātā Vibhutānanda Puri had explained to Him that in this very place where the temple stands, the Cosmic Mother Devi herself appeared to kill the demon Mahisãsura and she was ably assisted by Arunai Nayaki Amma as her army general.

The young Avatār’s team would do decoration for this deity periodically in this temple. It started off when the Avatār approached the temple priest for doing alankār (decoration) for during His 8th grade. He pursued what He saw in the dream and approached the temple priest to request to do decoration for her. Inspite of being known for his ferociousness, the priest agreed immediately. The Avatār alongwith His childhood friend Sampath and Sampath’s younger brother did the decoration exceeding the expectations of the priest and everyone else.

The priest was so happy with the decoration, he told the group of boys that they could come for any festival and do the decoration for the deity.

This is a pack of pictures of Goddess Arunai Nayaki Amman which The Young Avatār would distribute to the people. Arunai Nayaki Amman is a powerful deity in Tiruvannamalai. Distributing these pictures was The Avatār’s way of reaching the powerful Goddess to the people so they can experience her Grace in their lives. There were several packs such as these. This last pack remained which today finds its place in the biographical archives of the National archives of ShriKailasa, safe-kept by The Avatār’s mother and handed over to the organisation.
