1989 | Annamalai Swamigal, Direct Disciple of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi

This is Annamalai Swamigal, a great Paramahamsa and ultimate disciple of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi who was The Avatār’s inspiration when He was around 11 years old.

The Avatār recalls about Annamalai Swamigal:

“Once, Bhagavan Ramana was taking a bath and he called Annamalai Swamigal to rub his back. He was scrubbing Bhagavan’s back with brick and powder. Bhagavan saw that Annamalai Swamigal was having a thought current that Bhagavan’s body seemed ordinary like any other body… To give him the clarity, suddenly Bhagavan blew on Annamalai Swamigal’s face. He became enlightened. He was so ecstatic with joy that to help him stabilize, Bhagavan gave him a stick and said to go a few steps, and sit absorbed in Samādhi.

Annamalai Swamigal literally followed those words and for the rest of his life for the next 40 years he never moved away from that place! So I would always think of him.”

It was Annamalai Swamigal’s talk on ‘living beyond pain’ which inspired the young Avatār to experiment cutting his own right thigh to see if He experienced pain. His further interactions with Annamalai Swamigal and the technique Annamalai Swamigal gave Him, led to The young Avatār’s experience of Enlightenment at age 11 1/2.
